The appointment is half a day — the rest follows you home. The scan takes a morning; the report is written over the following five to ten working days and delivered electronically, usually as a PDF through the hospital's app or by email. This is standard at private and international hospitals, so a short visa-free stay is not a problem. Confirm three things before you pay: (1) that an English version exists — not all providers produce one by default, and some charge extra; (2) that it is delivered electronically to an email address you can access from home; and (3) that you can also get the original DICOM imaging files. Without the images, a doctor at home can only read the summary — and some doctors abroad discount reports they cannot verify.
Three types of provider
Public Grade-A (三甲)
Most authoritative results and direct referral into specialist care if something shows up. Regulated standard pricing. Busier, longer waits, less comfortable. Best if you have existing conditions or want results a doctor at home will take seriously.
Private hospitals
Hotel-style environment, English and Cantonese staff, faster reporting, private rooms, insurance direct billing at some. Pricier. Best if comfort, language and speed matter more than price.
Chain checkup centres
Standardised, efficient, cheapest — Meinian, Ciming, iKang, Rici. Hundreds of locations nationally. Good for a first or routine annual check. Check the specific branch's reputation.

How that compares
| Comparable check | Shenzhen | Hong Kong |
|---|---|---|
| Basic comprehensive check | $120¥800 – $225¥1,500 | HK$2,100+ (≈ $289¥1,930) |
| Executive full check | $449¥3,000 – $1,048¥7,000 | HK$9,060 (≈ $1,247¥8,330) |
| Women's health assessment, gynaecology included | $359¥2,400 – $479¥3,200 | HK$4,800 (≈ $662¥4,420) |
Against US and UK private self-pay pricing the gap is far wider — full executive physicals in London or New York routinely run several thousand dollars against a few hundred here.
Booking
- How: most providers take bookings through their WeChat mini-program, official site or phone. Several accept booking through Hong Kong health platforms that settle in Hong Kong dollars — useful if you have no mainland payment method.
- How far ahead: chain centres often have next-day slots. International departments at public hospitals typically need two weeks or more.
- Bring: passport, booking confirmation, and a list of current medications and any previous reports.
- Fasting: 8–12 hours before blood tests and abdominal ultrasound. Morning slots are standard. Avoid a heavy meal the night before.
- Duration: two to three hours on site.
Two traps
1. The cheap package is not the package you think it is. Entry prices often cover only basic panels. Multi-site ultrasound, additional tumour markers and imaging are frequently added on the day, sometimes at hard-sell intensity. Confirm exactly which items are in the list before you sign anything, and be sceptical of in-room upselling.
2. Report acceptance abroad. Some doctors overseas are cautious about reports from non-Grade-A or small centres. If the results matter, use a Grade-A public hospital or an internationally affiliated private hospital, and ask for the original DICOM image files plus a bilingual written report to take home.
Will insurance cover it? Usually not. Preventive screening without symptoms is excluded from most health insurance, including Hong Kong's VHIS. Some outpatient plans cover it as a wellness benefit — check before you rely on it. Hong Kong residents aged 65+ can use Elderly Health Care Vouchers at a designated list of Greater Bay Area providers including HKU-Shenzhen, Peking University Shenzhen and United Family.
