Last reviewed 9 October 2026. Studio pricing is quoted by base area, hair volume and construction method — treat these as realistic ranges.
Be honest about the lead time
Ready-made: same day, carry it home. Custom: 15–30 days, shipped to you. Both fit a short trip — but they are not equal, and the difference is tax rather than time. A production time of 15 to 30 days does not mean 15 to 30 days in Shenzhen: only the fitting needs you there, which is a single appointment. The finished piece ships internationally and usually lands two to four weeks later.
The catch is that mailed goods get no traveller allowance. Since the US removed de minimis treatment for commercial parcels in 2025, a shipped wig is assessed from the first dollar — and as a China-origin good it may attract additional duties on top. A piece you carry home in your luggage can fall inside your $800 personal exemption and often costs nothing at the border. Customs detail →
So the real decision is: buy ready-made and carry it (cheapest at the border, slightly compromised fit), or be measured for custom and ship it (best fit, but you pay duty on the full value).
Price ranges
| Type | Price | Lead time |
|---|---|---|
| Ready-made human hair, mall boutique | $45¥300 – $120¥800 | Same day |
| Partial topper / hair patch, custom | from ~$180¥1,200 | 15 – 30 days |
| Full custom unit, hand-tied, Indian or Burmese hair | $449¥3,000 – $1,198¥8,000 | 15 – 30 days |
| Salon-style fashion wig | $30¥200 – $150¥1,000 | Same day |
Pricing is driven by three variables: base area (how much of the scalp is covered), hair density, and construction method. Hand-tied needle-work bases with a hairline that mimics natural scalp shadow cost more and look better close up. Most custom units last around two years with proper care.
Where people actually go
Shenzhen's wig businesses cluster in two forms: mall boutiques with wide ready-made selections, and factory-backed studios in Longgang that do measurement and custom work.
Factory studios · Longgang
Longgang hosts several hair-system companies with their own production lines, offering direct-from-factory pricing plus in-person measurement, fitting and cutting. Best for custom work and long-term wear. Appointment-only in most cases.
Mall boutiques · Futian & Nanshan
Chains and boutiques in COCO Park, Excellence Century and Nanshan malls. Entry-level human hair from a few hundred yuan, no appointment needed, good for trying the idea before committing.
Large showrooms · Nanshan
Some studios run showroom floors with a thousand or more styles — worth a visit if you want to compare looks rather than commission a piece.
Bao'an & Longgang local studios
Smaller custom studios serving residents. Cheaper than the downtown chains for equivalent work, but book ahead and confirm they can communicate in your language.
What actually determines whether you will wear it
- Measurement accuracy. Head circumference is measured with a soft tape about 1 cm above the ear. An error over 1 cm means the piece shifts. This is the single biggest reason custom pieces fail — and the strongest argument for being measured in person rather than ordering online.
- Base material. Fine breathable mesh matters enormously in a humid climate like Shenzhen's. Ask what the base is made of; heavy bases are the main complaint from people who stop wearing theirs.
- Hairline construction. A graduated hairline with natural shadow is what makes the difference at close range. Ask to see examples on a person, not in a catalogue.
- Colour matching in person. Good studios compare against your own hair under the same light rather than matching a swatch.
Ask about lifetime servicing. The better studios include cleaning, repair, restyling and re-application instruction. Human-hair pieces need maintenance every few weeks, and this is where factory-direct studios beat one-off purchases — the relationship is the product.
Booking and practical notes
- Most custom studios are appointment-only. Walk-ins are frequently turned away. Book a day or more ahead by phone or WeChat.
- Weekends are busy. Book a weekday slot if you can.
- Language: factory studios in Longgang may not have English-speaking staff. Bring a translation app or a Mandarin-speaking companion — this is the most common practical difficulty for foreign buyers.
- Ready-made is a legitimate choice. If you want to try the look before spending four figures, buy a few hundred yuan piece from a mall boutique first.
On shipping: if you commission a custom piece and have it shipped home, remember that mailed goods do not benefit from any traveller customs allowance. US residents lost the de minimis exemption on commercial parcels in 2025, so a shipped wig is assessed from the first dollar. Carrying it home in your luggage inside your $800 exemption is usually far better. Full customs rules →
